Welcome to my Monthly Business & Lifestyle Review.
Each month I’m going to write a detailed review of the previous month.
I do this not only to help me keep track of my own progress, but I want to be open, honest and transparent about what’s going on in my business and life. I want to lead by example by showing you what’s working for me, and what’s not – both in life and business.
I left my high paying, full time job December 13th. That makes January my first complete month of working for myself and continuing to grow my business that I’ve been building on the side since June of 2012. I was able to build a business while still at my full time job and get it to a point where I could leave it, which means I know you can too.
Each month I’m going to review how I did when it came to achieving the previous months goals both in business and personal life.
In each monthly report I’ll cover the following topics.
- Did I Hit My Monthly Goals?
- Lessons Learned Along This Month
- Revenue / Expenses Breakdown
- Happiness Check
- Plans For next month
Without further adieu, welcome to my March Business and Lifestyle Review
Did I Hit My March Goals?
My 5 goals for March were:
- Outline The Mobile Marketing Business Academy (success)
- Start Recording podcasts for my upcoming Show (more on that soon) (success)
- Submit my Social Media Marketing World Presentation (success)
- Finish the consulting web project (half success)
- Rock the stage at Tropical Think Tank
1. Outline The Mobile Marketing Business Academy
Success! I got this done but realized before I start building this training I need to validate the idea and see if people will throw down money for it. I created an interest list by promoting the opportunity to my newsletter (~3k people). I setup a landing page using LeadPages and promoted it during the month of March only to my list and on my podcast at the end of each episode.
2. Start Recording Podcasts For My Upcoming Show
Success! I recorded over 12 episodes for my new podcast Leaving Corporate with the plans to launch it in iTunes in April.
3. Submit My Social Media Marketing World Presentation
Success! I submitted my presentation and the actual event was great. I stayed with my good friends John Lee Dumas and Kate Erickson of Entrepreneur On Fire and got tons of great feedback on my presentation. The room was packed and people were standing. I felt really good about the content and even had a line of people to talk to after the talk.
My biggest takeaway here was I had just a bit too much information in the presentation and rushed a bit. Lesson learned for next time. 🙂
4.Finish Web Consulting Project
Sort of a success. If you can say that. The work is done but the client hasn’t paid the last 50% yet. Been working on him to submit payment but he’s launching a new restaurant and been really difficult to get in touch with him.
5.Rock the Stage at Tropical Think Tank
I got to present twice (30 mins each) at TTT and the presentations went off great and I even think I might turn one into a product.
Other Notable Accomplishments And Such
- I spoke at Tropical Think Tank in the Philippines with some great friends like Pat Flynn, Chris Ducker, John Lee Dumas, Amy Porterfield, Natalie Sisson, Caleb Wojcik and Gideon Shalwick. We spent 5 days working with a small group of entrepreneurs and it was one of the best events I’ve ever been to hands down. I wrote about it here.
- We did a speakers only mastermind at this event and I gained a lot of clarity on how I’d charge for The Mobile Marketing Business Academy.
- I’m staying in Denver! Sarah (my fiancee) got matched in Denver for her residency and we’re moving into a new house together in June. No more long distance relationship! So excited.
- Our wedding is now in October 2014 vs. 2015 which we were originally going to do. Wedding planning continues!
- I got my tax return back and got a nice chunk of change for that which was a nice addition to the bank account.
Lessons Learned This Month
Traveling for 98% of the month is not for me. With all the flying and sitting at conferences I somehow got Sciatica which sucks. A lot of pain through my lower back and right leg so have plans to work on that.
Although I traveled a lot I gained a lot of coaching clients which is interesting. I worked less and gained more clients. 🙂 I can deal with that so I’m going to look to improve on this moving forward.
Revenue and Expenses Breakdown
- Coaching: $3994
- Affiliate: $550
- SMS Handbook Sales: $635
Total Revenue: $5179
- Assistant: $260*
- Coach/Mentor: $1000*
- Dropbox: $9.99*
- Ontraport: $247*
- Libsyn (podcast file hosting): $25.00*
- Paypal Website Payments Pro: $30*
* = Recurring
Total Expenses: $1571.00
Net Total March: $3607.01
Note: It’s important to note that in October of 2013 I sold my house for a nice profit which allowed me to pay off all of my debt and is used as a safety net for any living expenses. I really haven’t had to eat into this that much but will call that out if that becomes the case in future monthly reviews.
This month was awesome. I got to travel to Asia and spend time with some amazing people. I have further clarity on my business and my overall happiness is extremely high and stress is low.
The only unhappy part is dealing with this Sciatica.
- Launch a webinar for The Mobile Marketing Business Academy to my interest list
- Get 5-10 charter members in the MMBA
- Launch the Leaving Corporate Podcast and hit New& Noteworthy
- Bring on 1 new coaching client
- Keep recording Leaving Corporate episode
