“In order to achieve greatness you have to find comfort in uncomfortable situations”.
My coach told me that.
Not only that, he said I had to seek out those situations, despite my fears.
When you notice fear approaching—go towards it—because greatness is on the other side.
Fear is a funny thing. It keeps us alive, yet it also holds us back from accomplishing our goals.
My friend Jason said that if I can look at fear as a beacon, and follow it, I’m more likely to put myself in positions of discomfort. For me, that is where breakthrough happens.
During 2013, I was working full-time as the Manager of Mobile Marketing at Cabela’s.
They had moved their digital marketing team to Denver and I took on the role of defining their mobile strategy, building a team, and bringing a mobile vision to the organization.
One of the first things I did was interview a wide group of internal stakeholders from various departments.
I met with folks in IT, creative, merchandising, retail, email, social, customer service, marketing, branding etc.
It seemed one of the constant challenges in the organization was their dependencies on older systems.
Creativity was not a problem, but some of the systems in place were holding teams back from implementing new and innovative ways to market and connect with customers.
I’d find myself in conversations with these stakeholders sharing my vision for how we could be sending highly targeted and personalized messages to our customers through mobile.
The conversations usually ended the same way…me being told data was not available because two internal systems weren’t capable of talking with each other.
I was told many of the systems powering our website and back end databases we’re created years and years ago and hadn’t been updated since the early 2000’s.
